Fire pits - Your cozy backyard friend

As we are full-on rolling into the winter season it gets even a bit chilly at night here in Southern California. Fire pits are a year round fun addition to gather family and friends around but especially handy during the colder nights for some enjoyable nights outdoors. Let’s take a closer look at our options (cause it seems like Google search is throwing 1,000,000 solutions at you), from DIY versions to having a custom fire pit professionally built or maybe even just purchasing a ready to use fire pit, we will go over what to look for and how to make your final decision.

Let us get into the DIY fire pit options since we know how crafty and hands on a lot of our readers are ;)

In-Ground-Fire Pits: This is a fun alternative since the actual fire seems embedded in the ground, heat can warm you up from your toes all the way to your head other than off the ground fire pit which will usually only be able to heat most of your upper body parts. For the in-ground fire pit you will need to dig out a hole in your desired area, set brick inside the hole, slightly tilted on sides, then place flat stones around rim on top of bricks. This is a quick, cheap and sturdy alternative. I would not suggest this option though if you have young children or pets since it might be a falling into hazard.

Round-Stone-Fire-Pit: If you have some turf/grass in the area where your future dream fire pit will be placed, make sure to take out any plants, clean up the area so that only dirt is left, flatten the space compact the soil (we want to avoid that any bricks will sink into soft ground). Fill the compacted area with gravel and after that start building your rectangle or circular shape, securing the bricks with cement in between.

Concrete-Cast-Fire-Pit: You can use 2 big bowls, make your own concrete mix and pour your very own concrete fire pit. This one requires a bit more skill and a longer tutorial (maybe that will be a fun future blog post). For now I found this step-by-step tutorial right here: manmadediy.com
