Plants to avoid for your pup

We love them all, bunnies, cats, dogs, chicken….our pets surely make our lives so much more full of fun and love. But having pets (as every pet owner knows) comes with HUGE responsibilities.

Since the owner of our wonderful business has her golden-retriever dog Cookie, who is also EcodesignSD’s voluntary mascot, we are going to focus on all the plants that can be really harmful for your 4 legged friend. Dogs are naturally pretty good in knowing not to chew on poisonous stuff but let’s be honest: Have you caught your dog tearing up the trash and instinctually grabbing whatever is in reach? So to be on the safe side here are some common plants that are toxic for dogs and best be avoided in your household:

  • Tomato Plant (if you love these juicy red tomatoes as much as we do and want to keep planting them in your yard, make sure they are fenced in or not accessible to your dog’s reach)

  • Aloe Vera

  • English Ivy

  • Alocasia

  • Arrowhead Plant

  • Amaryllis

  • Castor bean or castor oil plant

  • Bird of Paradise

  • Z Plant

  • Dieffenbachia

  • Jade

  • Kafir Lily

  • Dracaena Fragrans

  • Cyclamen

  • Desert Rose

  • Kalanchoe

  • Dracaena

  • Eucalyptus

  • Flame Lily

  • Ficus Benjamina

  • Flamingo Flower

  • Geranium

  • Schefflera

  • Oleander

  • Asparagus Fern

  • Ti Plant

  • Peyote

  • Brunfelsia

  • Cactus

  • Philodendron

  • American Holly

  • Tulip

  • Hyacinth

  • Daffodil

  • Lily

  • Daisy

  • Azalea

  • Gladiola

  • Baby's Breath

  • Chrysanthemum

  • Begonia

  • Gardenia

  • Amaryllis

If you still want to keep any of these listed plants around, here are a few tips to keep your dog away from them:

  1. Spray the plants with diluted lemon juice (dogs cannot stand the taste or scent of this strong citrus fruit) or you can put a slice of lemon or orange peels in the planter

  2. Keep those plants out of reach

  3. Coffee ground is another safe alternative to add to the soil, dogs dislike the scent as well.

  4. Provide a variety of chew toys to make sure the dog does not get bored, which leads to destructive behavior.
